There seems to be some precipitation trickling down on sunny California over the last few days. I'm talking to a buddy of mine who lives in Long Beach and there was apparently a tornado warning on Tuesday, along with a fair amount of rain. He's been wet and irritated for a few days but quips "hey, we needed the rain".
I began thinking about how much I've heard this in my lifetime. People from Iowa, Arizona, Florida, Texas, New York, California etc. all have dry period and almost certainly whenever there is an abundance of rain, somebody says "we needed rain".
Stop it. Just stop it.
Every functioning human being understands the importance of rain. Putting aside hurricanes, acid rain and natural disasters for a moment, rain (like all precipitation) is quite important. It helps with agriculture and plant life. Droughts kinda suck since crops can't grow. Rain helps regulate reservoir levels which can be used for numerous things, such as hydroelectric power. Blah blah blah we all know this.
Most people get gloomy when it is rainy and dark outside. In areas where the climate is dry, rain is a source of happiness. Some people just simply like the rain and jumping in puddles.
But please, I beg of you, stop throwing in the "we needed rain" statement. The entire fucking world recognizes the importance of rain. There is nothing wrong with being gloomy and leaving the emotion at that. Stop trying to put a positive spin on rain. It's wet. You're nice shoes are getting ruined. It sucks. You can admit it.
You never hear somebody say, "yeah some guy got murdered. That means that one person will not eat anymore and there will be food for one more person on this earth".
It's ok to be totally miserable in the rain. Please stop transforming into a wet Pollyanna.
